HOLY EPISCOPAL SYNOD OF THE MALANKARA SYRIAN CHURCH
During the 4th apostolic visit of His
Holiness Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, the Patriarch and the Supreme Head of the
Universal Syrian Orthodox Church of Antioch & all the East, an Episcopal
Synod of the Malankara
Syrian Church was convened under the presidentship of the Holy father on
26th October 2008 at the Kothamangalam Marth Mariam Cathedral (Valiya
Pally). His Beatitude the Catholicos, the Metropolitans of all the
Syriac Orthodox denominations in India and the visiting Metropolitans
attended the Synod proceedings.
MALANKARA EPISCOPAL SYNOD
In the Malankara Syrian Church presently there are 27 Bishops of Indian origin including the regional head of the Church in India, the Catholicos. For a detailed list of all the metropolitans of Indian Origin, visit:

As per the Church constitution, His Beatitude the Catholicos will chair the proceedings of the regional Synod in which all the bishops of Malankara, are members. This includes the Metropolitans of Knanaya Archdiocese, Simhasana churches and Evangelical & Honavar Mission. When the supreme head of the Church, the Patriarch, is present, His Holiness has to preside over the Episcopal Synod. In the absence of the holy father, all the important decisions taken in the Synod meeting pertaining to the Spiritual matters, has to be submitted before the Patriarch for final approval. However the full authority with respect to the temporal matters regarding the Jacobite Syrian Christian Church rests with the regional Synod and the respective diocesan bodies.

and under the sub-presdientship of H.B. Baselios Thomas-I, the Catholicos on 26th October 2008
