FORMER MALANKARA METROPOLITAN CANONISED

KOTTAYAM: Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, Patriarch of Antioch, canonised Paulos Mor Koorilos, former Malankara Metropolitan, as saint of the Universal Syrian Church on Friday.  Earlier, Sakralla Mor Baselios and Yuyakkim Mor Koorilos were canonised by the Patriarch.

The day began early at the St Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Church, Panampadi, near Kumarakom, with morning prayers commencing at 6.30 a.m. This was followed by celebration of Mass by diocesan Metropolitan Thomas Mor Themotheos and Metropolitan Mathias Mor Philexinos. The conclusion of the Mass coincided with the arrival of the Patriarch and Catholicos Baselios Thomas I accompanied by bishops.

After the rousing reception accorded on the church leaders, the Pontiff offered special prayers at the tombs of the late bishops Paulose Mor Koorilos and Micheal Mor Dionysius whose mortal remains are entombed at the church. This was followed by the Holy Mass celebrated by the Patriarch during which the declaration canonizing Mor Koorilose was made. After the consecration ceremony at the St. Mary’s church on Friday, the Pontiff visited St. John’s Jacobite Syrian church, Attamangalam, where he addressed a public meeting. This was followed by his visit to Puthuppally where he consecrated the newly constructed St. George Patriarchal church and the Patriarchal centre.
