The Committee examined with the archbishops the diverse activities and celebrations that will be sponsored by His Holiness personally in some Syriac Orthodox Archdioceses in 2015.

His Holiness and the Archbishops then discussed the current situation of the Syriac Archdioceses in the Middle East, especially concerning the issue of the Christian presence in Iraq and Syria. They condemned the terroristic acts, violence, killings and forced immigration inflicted on the faithful of the Church as well as the desecration of churches and church properties and seizing the properties of the faithful. They demanded the International Community to provide international protection for Christians in Mosul and the Nineveh Plain. They also insisted on the immediate return of the displaced to their houses and homes.

On the situation in Syria, the Fathers called for implementing a peaceful solution to the crisis in Syria. Likewise, they condemned terrorism and religious extremism, and called for the strengthening of the spirit of tolerance and common living. They implored the international organizations and commissions to provide the necessary humanitarian help to all the immigrants and refugees.

On the political situation in Lebanon, the Fathers urged the politicians and officials in Lebanon to elect a new President whom, they hope, will lead the country out of the political and constitutional crisis and will contribute to the making of an electoral law which meets the aspirations of the Lebanese people of all denominations. Furthermore, they urged the Lebanese authorities to facilitate the affairs of the immigrants coming from Iraq and Syria.
At the conclusion of their meeting, His Holiness and the Archbishops prayed together asking the Lord to have His peace and security prevail throughout the world, especially in the Middle East.

The primate of the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Syrian Orthodox Church are turning to the whole Christian world and the international community so that, on the occasion of the centennial commemorations the crimes committed against the Armenians and Syriac Christians in 1915, in the current territories of Turkey, are recognized and condemned.

The Supreme Patriarch and Catholicos of all Armenians, Karekin II, and the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch, Mar Ignatius Aphrem II, met on Monday, October 13 at the spiritual center of all Armenians, the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, 20 kilometers from Yerevan, where they signed a Joint Declaration to affirm the unity of faith, and the willful desire to continue cooperation between the two sister Churches, the Armenian and Syriac Orthodox "sister Churches, founded by the Apostles, the same Christology and Apostolic Tradition, patristic heritage and common saints, confessors and witnesses". After expressing their pastoral concern for what is happening in the Middle East, the two Patriarchs in their statement launched a joint appeal: "We invite the entire Christian world, says the document sent to Fides Agency, to unite in prayer at the Armenian Genocide and the Syriac Sayfo centennial commemorative events in 2015. We call upon the civilized world to recognize and condemn the crimes committed against the Armenian and Syriac peoples as well as other Christian communities".

His Holiness Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II : “Isn’t the International Community Ashamed?”

Responding to the Invitation of the Community of Sant’Egidio, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II partook in the opening of the “Peace is the Future: Religions and Cultures in Dialogue, 100 Years After World War I” in Antwerp – Belgium on September 7, 2014. The session was attended by many dignitaries and politicians from Europe as well as religious leaders from all religions.

Patriarch Aphrem II gave a true picture of the situation of the Christians in the Middle East. He informed the audience that he is carrying “the voice of millions of Christians and non-Christians in the Middle East;  "... the voices of Sunnis that are killed by Sunnis, Shiites that are targeted by Islamist fanatics, Christians and Yezidis that were expelled from their homes and towns, children who have lost their parents, and millions of people who desire to live in peace with each other, but international politics and religious fanaticism prevent them from doing so…”.  He demanded a quick intervention to allow Christians from Mosul and the Nineveh Plains to return to their houses and enable them to defend themselves.

He also spoke about the situation in Lebanon and expressed his worries about the consequences of the acts witnessed in Arsal and called the politicians to elect a president in order to get the country out of this situation that threatens its stability and security.

The Patriarch emphasized that; “we realize that the war in Syria benefitted no one”; on the contrary, it is a great loss for all. He wondered how one can justify all the barbaric acts of kidnapping, beheading, killing and destroying everything, even uprooting old trees” which are committed in the name of reform in Syria?" He called upon the international community to increase its humanitarian help to the Syrian refugees whose number has exceeded 4 million.

"Isn’t the international community ashamed of its silence about the abduction of the two prominent bishops Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji?”  The Patriarch declared this expressing his worries of the absence of trusted information and communication on this matter. He addressed all people of good will to work together demanded them to have immediate actions in order to have their immediate release.

At the end, His Holiness stressed that the situation of Christians in the Middle East must be a top priority to the international community and called upon all parties to cooperate to implement a solution that will guarantee an everlasting peace in the region and security for all the religious minorities in the region.

T his was followed by a meeting with the Apostolic Nuncio in Lebanon, the Representative of UN Secretary-General and the Ambassadors of the Permanent Members to the UN Security Council

On August 27, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II participated in the meeting of the patriarchs and head of churches in the East in the Maronite patriarchal headquarters in Bkerkeh. The meeting was held following the visit of a delegation of patriarchs to the region of Kurdistan to investigate the conditions of the displaced Christians from Mosul and the Nineveh Plains. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the events that affect Christians in the Middle East.

His Beatitude Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rai, Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, called for this meeting. Their Beatitudes: Catholicos Aram I Kishishian, Armenian Orthodox Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, Mor Ignatius Youssef III Younan, Syrian Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, John X, Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, represented by their Eminences Archbishops Baselius Mansour and Aphrem Kyriakos, Gregorius III Lahham, Greek Catholic Patriarch of Antioch and All the East, Alexandria and Jerusalem, Nerses Bedros XIX, Armenian Catholic Patriarch, Mar Rafael Louis Sako, Chaldean Patriarch of Babylon, and Rev. Dr. Selim Sahyouni, Head of the Evangelical Church in Syria and Lebanon, participated in the meeting.

The patriarchs and head of churches opened their meeting with a prayer asking for peace for this troubled region, especially Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, the Holy Lands and Egypt. Discussions were then held about the future of Christians in the Middle East following the visit of a delegation of patriarchs to the region of Kurdistan and closely observing the needs of displaced Christians and the conditions they are living in.

After their closed meeting, the patriarchs and heads of churches met with the Apostolic Nuncio in Lebanon Mgr. Gabrielle Caccia, the representative of the UN Secretary-General Mr. Derek Plumbly, and the ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council: David Hill (USA), Alexander Zaspikin (Russia), Tom Fletcher (UK), and the chargé d’affaires of the French Embassy Jerome Kochar, and the chargé d’affaires of the Chinese Embassy Han Jing.
At the end of the meetings, the patriarchs and head of churches issued a statement that condemned the violence acts against Christians in the Islamic and Arab world, especially in Iraq and Syria. They demanded to stop all support of the fanatic movements and to protect Christians and secure their continuous existence in the Middle East. The statement included demands and recommendations which reflect to the international public opinion and mass media the concerns and demands of Christians in the Middle East who are suffering from all sorts of killing and injustice.

The patriarchs and heads of churches also demanded the international community to “work seriously … to find shelters for Christians, to help them enter schools and universities, to give back their houses and possessions, preserve their rights and secure fair and just treatment for them as citizens”. This could be done through the cooperation between the Iraq government and the Regional Government of Kurdistan by liberating the villages of the Nineveh Plains from the control of the Islamic State (ISIS) and by allowing the return of the displaced to their homes with international and local protections.

They feel sorrow for the terroristic acts and invite the Islamic authorities to issue a Fatwa that forbids expiation of others and aggressing Christians and Christian properties. They demanded the United Nations, the Security Council and the International Criminal Court to stop these organizations and exert pressure on those who support them and finance them.

They have emphasized that the Christians will remain “attached to their homeland, their national belonging and their freedom as citizens of their countries. They are committed to Christian values and the teachings of Christ which govern their relations with others, especially with muslim compatriots”. They demanded them to deal with the causes of the misery of Christians in order to find a lasting and peaceful solution.

The Patriarchs and heads of Churches called the international community to treat “with justice” what is happening in Syria in order to stop the conflict, killing and destruction. They also feel sorrow for the silence and indifference regarding the abduction of the two bishops of Aleppo: Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yaziji.

They have also recommended politicians in Lebanon to “preserve it as a secular country … to be the country of man and faith, and the civilized lighthouse in the East”. They also called the political parties and deputies to “come to an understanding together on the issue of electing a president quickly”.

On July 31, 2014, His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II received a delegation from the Islamic-Christian Youth Commission for Dialogue headed by its president Mr. Malek Al-Mawlawi and vice-president Mr. Joy Haddad, in the patriarchal residence in Atchaneh, Bikfaya – Lebanon in the presence of His Eminence Mor Timotheos Matta Al-Khoury.

His Holiness listened to a brief exposition of the work of the commission and its mission. The president of the commission described their work in politics, society and culture.

His Holiness Patriarch Aphrem II then spoke of the current situation and the role of religion in spreading the message of peace and tolerance. He confirmed that religious fanaticism that we experience in our days, is not acceptable and intruder to our community that is based on love and living together. He added that the expiation of others who hold different religious beliefs than ours is a new phenomenon to our oriental mentality. This oriental mentality is accustomed to dealing with human beings with love and understanding despite religious differences. This is the importance of dialogue to resolve conflicts. He emphasized that some organizations in our countries are harming the noble sense of humanity and they are an indication that their followers do not believe in God, rather they are terrorist groups that are against Islam and violate the religious rights of the minorities.

At the end of the meeting, His Holiness blessed the members of the delegation and requested from them to proceed practically to strengthen the ways of mutual understanding and dialogue especially within youth to insure that they adopt moderation and reject fanaticism.

Message of His Holiness Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, following the Meeting with Representatives of the Churches of Mosul

Our people and beloved faithful in Iraq,
Our Displaced Children from Mosul,
Dear attendees,

The incidents, that have been taking place since “Islamic State of Iraq and Syria” (ISIS) took control of a dear region of Iraq which is the cradle of humanity and the birthplace of our civilization, are considered barbarian and unprecedented acts in the history of the Christian Muslim relations in this region. ISIS systematically forced Christians and some Muslims out of the city of Mosul labeling them with racist signs and symbols, humiliating and luting them. Therefore, we strongly condemn these acts, and assert that this type of actions and this practice of Islam do not represent the Islam we have lived with for more than thirteen centuries.

This kind of Islam does not revere the religious texts nor the human relationships. Thus, we call upon our Muslim fellows and their leadership to take a clear stance against these actions and this phenomenon that contradicts the Qur’anic text. At the same time, we are astonished by the silence of most Muslim religious leaders and civil dignitaries regarding what has been happening in Mosul.

The forced displacement of our people, the taking over of our churches, the destruction of our sacred shrines, and the stealing of the properties and the future of our people will not prevent us from fulfilling our mission in this dear Levant. This injustice, which is against the heavenly and human laws, will not compel us to ask for Western protection or help. It is not out of fear or weakness, but because we believe that we are the salt of this land and the witnesses of the Resurrection till eternity. Nonetheless, we request that our compatriots be faithful to our common religious, cultural and human values and support and strengthen the Christian presence in this part of the world. Solidarity statements are not enough, they should stand against and stop supporting those who supply weapons and finance ISIS and similar organizations. Such fanatic acts will surely backfire on those who perpetuate them sooner or later.

Moreover, we declare that we are going to address the United Nations and the highest international and the Human Rights Fora to hold them accountable to the Bill of Rights they claim to support. We will ask them to abide by the Bill of Rights with no selectiveness or discrimination based on nationality or social identity.

We insist that what has been inflicted on our people in Mosul is a war crime. Forced displacements on the basis of religious belief, be it Islam or Christianity, is a crime against humanity and requires punishment. Despite what it is going through, we wish to see our beloved Iraq united and embracing all of its components and providing them with their rights. We demand that the Iraqi government protect the rights of the Christians to remain in their land and live with dignity. Moreover, we ask our Kurdish compatriots to work with us to protect the Christian presence in order to preserve the historical and cultural diversity in the region.

On the other hand, we say to our people in Mosul, Nineveh plain and Iraq in general: we will try our best, using all possible means, to provide you with the requisites to have a dignified life through our faithful children in the East and our international relations in an attempt to help you stay in the land of your fathers and forefathers. We will also appeal for the recuperation of your belongings and properties.

Finally, we are working to convene an urgent meeting soon with our brothers the Patriarchs of the East to discuss and take decisions concerning what has happened in Mosul and what is happening to the Christians of the East. We will form a Christian delegation from the East to carry this cause to the United Nations and to other international platforms as deemed necessary.

We thank Their Eminences and Excellencies the representatives of the Syrian Catholic Church, Chaldean Church and Assyrian Church of the East along with the General Secretary of the Middle East Council of Churches and the Ambassador of Iraq in Lebanon for accepting our invitation and for their presence here to consult with us and to work together for the common interest of our suffering people in Mosul.

Thank you,
We also thank the press and journalists who responded positively to our invitation.

Mosul Christians Out of the City for Good

By Judit Neurink 19/6/2014

Link: http://rudaw.net/english/middleeast/iraq/190620141

BARDARASH, Kurdistan Region – There is no place for them in an Islamic state, say Christians who fled Iraq’s second city of Mosul for safer areas controlled by the autonomous Kurdistan Region.  Eman and Sabah, two nurses who left the city for the Syrian Orthodox monastery of Mar Mattai, some 40 kilometers from Mosul, said they did so because they could no longer live there. “Their rules are different from ours and anyone who disobeys them will be killed,” one of them said.

Fear of the extremist Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), which captured Mosul last week together with bands of other rebels, has seen about a half-million people flee the city. Amongst them were thousands of Christians, who sought refuge in areas under control of the Kurds. Many of them have fled violence in the city multiple times before. “This time is decisive,” stresses Zaid, whose family shares a room in the monastery with another.  “Any time there were elections, we left to return a couple of weeks later. This time is different. Now we really have to forget the option of returning back to our homes.” Many of the Christians occupying the monastery’s 35 guest rooms think this way: More than 50 families have found refuge in the safety of the monastery.

Of the estimated 5,000 Christians who were remaining in Mosul, only hundreds have stayed behind. Most left for the villages of the Nineveh Valley, which is under Kurdish control, or to the Christian neighborhoods of the Kurdistan capital, Erbil. Last week their patriarch came from Syria to wish them strength, visiting the Mar Mattai monastery as well, signaling the safety of the area where his flock has sought refuge. The way the radical Muslims were welcomed by some in Mosul -- while thousands of other Muslims fled because of their presence – raised Christian fears of what might happen. The nurses, Eman and Sabah, were ordered to report back to work, because the present authorities want to normalize the situation and get the hospitals up and running. But the pair is too afraid to obey the order.

Although they left with only the clothes they were wearing, leaving their homes unguarded, the fear of the radical Muslims in their city keeps them from returning. This fear is clear when they echo the words of other women in the monastery: “How can we keep our daughters safe there?” In the room where the two families are gathered, the noisy air conditioning adds to the clamor; mattresses for the night are piled high; a little boy begs his father for change to buy ice cream. Stories about the changes in Mosul volley across the room, about the Sharia laws that have been imposed and the new rules that have been published, including a punishment of 20 lashes for any man not at mosques at prayer times, and an order for women to cover up. One of the families that returned was told that Christians have to adapt: They have to get rid of all Christian symbols, and women must wear the face cover, or niqaab. The family left the city again. Zaid recounts finding a flyer in the street before he left that was delivered to some homes of Christians, too, calling on residents to adapt, or leave.

Christians in Iraq normally proudly display their faith, wearing crosses as jewelry and adorning their homes with Christian portraits. The women generally dress in a more Western manner than other Iraqi women, not wearing a headscarf and never a niqaab. To change this would mean to change their way of life. The Christians wonder what will happen to their city. Most expect fighting between the different groups, with Saddam Hussein’s former military and different Islamic groups struggling for power. “Those armed groups know no mercy,” someone says. “I am afraid of my own neighbors. Will they not sell me to some kidnapper?” And they are worried about the future: What will happen to their properties? Will they be confiscated, in a repeat of what happened in parts of Baghdad some years ago after many Christians fled their homes?

One worry is about how they will live.  Iraqi Kurdistan is expensive, and their jobs from Mosul cannot be transferred elsewhere. Some have families abroad that pressure them to emigrate. “We are so few now, we have become very vulnerable,” someone says. The number of Christians in Iraq went from 1.5 million in 2003 to around 35,000 at present, mainly because of massive emigration after Saddam’s fall.

WCC celebrates enthronement of Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Ignatius Aphrem II

[WCC] Rev. Dr Olav Fykse Tveit, general secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), extended greetings from the worldwide fellowship of churches to His Holiness Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II during a celebration in Beirut on 1 June following his enthronement as Syriac Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch and All East, and Supreme Head of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church.

Ignatius Aphrem II, formerly Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim of the Eastern United States of America from 1996 to 2014, was enthroned as patriarch in Damascus on 29 May. His predecessor, Patriarch Igatius Zakka I Iwas, had died on 21 March after a long illness.

Speaking on behalf of the WCC, Tveit said, "The fellowship of our member churches is thankful to the Triune God, the God of life, that you are called to this significant ministry of leadership. You have been provided with your many gifts of wisdom, knowledge, communication, courage, friendliness and joy to fill this role."

Tveit added that this enthronement is to be taken as “a sign of hope”, especially in such “difficult and challenging times for Syria and the whole Middle East region.”

The new patriarch was born on 3 May 1965 in Qamishli, Syria. He was educated at St Ephraim’s Theological Seminary in Lebanon, Coptic Theological Seminary in Cairo, Egypt and St Patrick’s College in Maynooth, Ireland.

The WCC general secretary noted that, as a Syriac Orthodox archbishop in the United States, the newly enthroned patriarch represented his church at three WCC Assemblies and has served on the central and executive committees of the WCC, as well as in the leadership of other ecumenical bodies such as Christian Churches Together and the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A.

Tveit concluded by offering prayers for the patriarch, for the Syriac Orthodox Church throughout the world, and particularly for the release of two Orthodox archbishops, Youhanna Ibrahim and Boulos Yazigi, who were kidnapped near Aleppo, Syria more than a year ago.
