Mor Severios Hazail Soumi
Patriarchal Vicar of Belgium and France

 

 

Metropolitan Mor Severios Hazail Soumi was born on 5th November 1965 in Kamishly, Syria.  After his college education he had his theological studies in the St. Ephrem's Clerical Seminary. In 1993 he was send to the 'Catholique de Louvain' University in Belgium from where he graduated in Oriental studies and Theology.  In 1996 he received the Master's Degree in Oriental Studies from the same institution. In 1996-98 period he studied Politics and International relationship. In 1998 he was appointed as the general librarian of the Patriarchal library. From 1998 till 2005 he was a member of "Laboratoire des Religions du Livre" CNRS (URA 152), Paris.

On 12th February 2006, His Holiness the Patriarch Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas consecrated Very Rev. Rabban Hazail Soumi as Metropolitan by name SEVERIOS in the church at Brussels, Belgium. His Holiness later issued the 'Stathikon' appointing Mor Severios as the Patriarchal Vicar for the newly formed Archdiocese of Belgium and France.  Their Eminences Mor Dioscoros Benyamin Atas (Patriarchal-Vicariate of the Archdiocese of Sweden), Mor Julius AbdulAhad G. Shabo (Metropolitan of Sweden & Scandinavia), Mor Clemis Eugene Kaplan (Patriarchal Vicar of Western USA), Mor Osthatheos Matta Rohum (Metropolitan of Jazirah & Euphrates), Mor Severios Malke Mourad (Patriarchal-Vicariate for Jerusalem & Jordan), Mor Athanasius Elia Bahe (Patriarchal Assistant) and Mor Yusphinos Paulos (Patriarchal Vicariate for Zahle & Beqa), assisted His Holiness in the consecration ceremony of Mor Severios Hazail Soumi.

His Eminence is involved in the setting up of CIJS (Centre International Jacques de Saroug) in 2000 which is a centre for Syriac studies and archiving in Brussels, Belgium.  He was also actively involved in the digitalization and codicological studies of numerous Syriac manuscripts from Turkey, Syria and Lebanon. At present His Eminence is doing his Ph.D. at the Sorbonne University in Paris.
