Patriarch Aphrem II begins 11-day State visit from today

Visit to pave way for peace in Malankara Church

February 7, 2015 05:41 IST: Patriarch of the Syrian Orthodox Church Ignatius Aphrem II is scheduled to arrive on Saturday on an 11-day visit to the State. He will be received at the Cochin international airport by head of the Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church Catholicos Baselios Thomas I and other leaders of the Church.

The Patriarch is arriving here from Dubai, after 8 a.m., and will be in Kerala as State guest. Minister for Excise and Ports K. Babu and Minister for Civil Supplies Anoop Jacob are scheduled to receive him at the airport. The Patriarch’s visit is being seen as an occasion for unity in the Malankara Church. There are talks that the Patriarch’s visit would provide a path to peace between the Orthodox and Jacobite factions in the Malankara Church. There was uncertainty about the Patriarch’s visit to Kerala late last year apparently because of differences of opinion within the Jacobite Church. The Patriarch, on arriving at the airport, will proceed to the Patriarchal Centre, Puthenkurisu.

He is scheduled to speak to the media later in the afternoon and address the synod of the bishops of the Jacobite Church at St. George’s Cathedral, Karingachira. The Patriarch will be accorded a public reception in Kottayam. He will be addressing the Maramon Convention. The Patriarch will leave for Chennai on February 17 and from there fly to New Delhi where he is scheduled to meet President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
